Legislative Republicans used their weekly press gathering today to hit a range of topics.

First, House Minority Leader Paul Stam, R-Wake, offered a book full of evidence to refute criticism of his two-week-old comments about the death penalty. Stam cited a study that suggests North Carolina’s current de facto death penalty moratorium could cost lives in the Tar Heel state. He stands by that assertion.

Switching gears, Stam also mentioned Republicans’ plans to keep track of the majority Democrats’ efforts to find budget savings this year.

Rep. George Cleveland, R-Onslow, discussed briefly his bill to ban in-state college tuition for illegal immigrants.

Senate Minority Leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, has concerns about bills that would allow voter registration at one-stop voting sites. Berger says the idea is good, if the prospective voters are required to show photo identification.
