There seems to be no end to some officials’ belief they should pre-determine which businesses are “special” and which aren’t. In the latest twist, which gave Michael Sanera heartburn, the City of Winston-Salem is serving up low-interest loans to new restaurants that locate in a special redevelopment area. Two have already defaulted on $176,000 of $182,000 loaned — an atrocious default rate. Yet, as Sanera explained to readers of The Daily Record of Dunn, officials defend the program. “Is that really what we have local government for?” Sanera asked.
