The campaign for state superintendent of public instruction could be one of the most interesting executive-level races in North Carolina next year. Recently, it got a little more interesting when state Rep. Rick Glazier, D-Cumberland, filed paperwork (PDF download) to run for superintendent.

That has set the stage for a potential primary between Glazier and current superintendent June Atkinson, who also is a Democrat. The fact that Glazier has opened a campaign committee doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll run, but it certainly seems to increase the likelihood.

So far, three Republican candidates have announced their bids for the superintendent’s office. Aside from Glazier and Atkinson, state Rep. Tricia Cotham, D-Mecklenburg, has expressed interest in running on the Democrats’ side.
