Just a week after dissing UNC’s Tyler Hansbrough, the Chicago Tribune’s Rick Morrissey turns sweet and writes about how the NCAA Torunament will be the national focus for the next three weeks. No kidding. I’ll go ahead and assume that Morrissey was impressed with Hansbrough’s performance over the weekend, if he saw any of it, that is.
On the subject, Virginia Tech’s Seth Greenberg illustrated over the weekend the thing that has bothered for me for years about the NCAA Tournament. As one who can remember the time when a team won the conference tournament or went home, I’m still bothered by the subjective nature of the the tournament selection process. It breeds the whining and complaining that you hear every year from bubble coaches like Greenberg who argue that their team should move to the next round despite not doing what they’re supposed to do — win. It’s part of the entitlement society we’ve become. I realize that’s a simplified view of something that’s become way too complex —and lucrative — over the years, but I can still long for the good ol’ days, right?
I enjoyed the game, but the way I saw it all Tech did was put three big bodies on Hansbrough. The Hokies couldn’t hit a shot down stretch and then failed to block out when it counted most. Sorry Seth. Just do well in the NIT.
