Regarding the Racial Justice Act, I agree with former Forsyth District Attorney Tom Keith:

“I wish they would have the intestinal fortitude to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on the death penalty, either way. What they’re doing now is just killing us and it’s not fair to the victims. If they do away with [the death penalty], fine; if they keep it, fine. But just tell us what the rules are so I can get on with my life.”

It’s basically a backdoor to getting rid of the death penalty altogether. Right on cue, the N&R in a pretty reasonable lead editorial, says the “easier way” to remove inmates from the death row is to eliminate the death penalty altogether.

I am not a rabid death penalty proponent, though I wouldn’t cry if the likes of Blanche Taylor Moore and Lesley Warren ceased consuming precious oxygen. And — as my aforementioned buddy pointed out last night —- how long before lawyers decide that life in prison without parole is cruel and unusual punishment?
