Leaving out the word “alleged” for ease in reading:

A hate crime occurred in Asheville. I am unclear why a distinction has to be made between normal crimes and hate crimes, as violence and hate are so intertwined. Regardless, Luke Hankins made an innocent trip to a local grocery story and was harassed with homophobic slurs on the way in. On the way out, he was beaten. His face sustained multiple fractures, his glasses were broken, and he was left “crumpled up” in the parking lot. An officer responded to the crime scene, but the perps were long gone. When Hankins placed an inquiry at the police station after a brief stay in the hospital, he found the officer didn’t file a report. The person who inflicted the injuries was apprehended due to an anonymous tip, but he was let go on a promise to appear in court. He has served time in a state prison.
