Watauga County Chair Nathan Miller is interested in dissolving the Department of Social Services board. He views it as inefficient, now that a new law allows the county to absorb its responsibilities. The DSS’ current director, Jim Atkinson, did not like the idea, saying the appointment of his successors could become political. Isn’t it sad how those trusted to make wise decisions for all are accused of being the most political?

Regardless, Miller said the current regime at least was not being political.

Miller said he’s heard “horror stories” in other counties about commissioners left powerless in the face of out-of-control social services departments.

“They run wild,” he said. “They’re taking babies right and left.”
