Been hearing a lot of talk about a 1/4-cent sales tax hike for schools in Guilford County since Davidson County passed its sales tax hike and all— in its editorial bashing the school board for voting itself a raise, the N&R says “voters may feel more generous now, and the money is more badly needed.” Indeed, voters didn’t feel real generous in 2008 or 2010.

Evidently it’s just not talk —the Rhino (unposted) reports school board chairman Alan Duncan –who voted against the board giving itself a raise — officially asked commissioners to put the sales tax hike on the ballot. Apparently county commissioners hadn’t heard any of that talk:

Commissioner Hank Henning, the chairman of the Education Committee said the request caught him off guard.

“That’s the first time the schools have mentioned it to me,” Henning said.

Rhino’s Scott Yost also notes that commissioners can adopt resolutions designating sales tax money for schools all they want, but legally they can spend it on whatever they want.
