Former UNC Trustee, militia colonel, and superior court judge, Samuel Spencer passed away. He was also a leading Anti-Federalist during the ratification debates at the Hillsborough Convention (1788). Willie Jones was the political faction’s mastermind, and Spencer, a great orator, served as its mouthpiece. He also played a major role in Bayard v. Singleton (1787), a case in which the North Carolina Supreme Court overturned a General Assembly act as unconstitutional.
