North Carolina posted a two point gain in mathematics scores and a four point decline in reading scores. Nationwide, the average score fell from 1028 to 1021 due to a five point drop in reading and a two point drop in math. North Carolina’s mean total SAT score was 1008, compared to 1021 for the U.S. and 1001 for the Southeast.

Asian students gained 13 points for an average score of 1064, black students gained six points for an average score of 857, and Hispanic students gained seven points for an average score of 967. White student lost three points and posted an average score of 1058.

Overall, the changes were small, but the results indicate persistent problems with reading instruction in the state.
