Tomorrow is a big day for candidates in two Triangle-area congressional races. NBC 17 will host debates between District 2 candidates Both Etheridge (D) and Renee Ellmers (R) and District 13 candidates Brad Miller (D) and Bill Randall (R).

Here’s hoping that, in addition to traditional questions about key issues, the moderator will ask the candidates a more probing and revealing question: What role do you believe the federal government should play in your constituents’ lives and where do you draw the line for government intervention?

Why do I hope for that question? Because we are living in an era where government is the go-to problem solver for those in power — whether the problem is big or small, real or perceived. A candidate’s view on this question will tell a voter whether they are focused on individual rights and liberties, or government power.
