Budget writers can help ensure the state’s long-term ability to meet its fiscal needs thanks to windfall revenue this year. Legislative fiscal staff expect the state to have $356.7 million more in revenue than originally budgeted, in addition to nearly $500 million already in unreserved fund balance from FY 2016-17. That’s more than $800 million that can secure the budget against unforeseen revenue shortfalls and protect the retirement promises made to state employees for pensions and health benefits.
