Budget writers can help ensure the state’s long-term ability to meet its fiscal needs thanks to windfall revenue this year. Legislative fiscal staff expect the state to have $356.7 million more in revenue than originally budgeted, in addition to nearly $500 million already in unreserved fund balance from FY 2016-17. That’s more than $800 million that can secure the budget against unforeseen revenue shortfalls and protect the retirement promises made to state employees for pensions and health benefits. You can see more of the state’s budget in our new chart book.
