Roughly half of Guilford County Schools students eligible for a Say Yes to Education scholarship have completed necessary paperwork, with the May 1 deadline looming:
“This opportunity is so great that we don’t want anybody to miss out on it,” said Lindsay Whitley, director of the Guilford Parent Academy.
Hence the effort to spread the word.
Of an estimated 5,000 seniors expected to graduate with the Class of 2016, almost 40 percent have completed the certification form, or application, for tuition scholarships from Say Yes Guilford. A little more than half of them, 1,700 students, have completed the FAFSA, said Donnie Turlington, a spokesman for Say Yes Guilford.
They need to do both.
“We need people completing their FAFSA. Not just filling it out but completing it,” said Kristen Christman, scholarship director for Say Yes Guilford.
May 1 is the deadline to apply for the tuition scholarships. Students have to complete the FAFSA to be considered for one of the Say Yes tuition scholarships.
“FAFSA” being the “Free Application for Federal Student Aid.” Interesting that when reading the article, it appears that students are lagging behind when filling out the FAFSA form, but more than half have completed that form while 40 percent have completed the Say Yes application. At any rate, there’s a lot of money out there for the taking—-will be interesting to see just how much taking there will be.
