Live from the Legislature

SB-260, mandating that schools provide information on cervical cancer, was heard in the House Health Committee, today.

This bill is a pre-curser to the controversial Texas legislation that requires the HPV vaccine to all girls beginning as young as 11. This bill does not require the vaccine but does require information be provided to girls and their parents.

Rep. Avila (R-Wake) asks to add emphasis on pap smears in the information, since the sponsors of the bill emphasize that the purpose is prevention of cervical cancer.

Rep. Trudi Walend (R-Transylvania) and Rep. Ty Harrell (D-Wake) ask how the information will be disseminated.

The bill receives a favorable report and will be passed to the House Education Committee for consideration.
