There is a major problem with SB 3 (the new law that puts a mandate on renewable energy production) that has just come to our attention.  Provisions within the law appear to allow utility companies to charge customers an extra fee to support renewable energy and then use the money collected to purchase “credits” from other states such as Texas that produce a lot of renewable energy.

The problem?  The electricity produced would never make it back to the North Carolina electric grid and would be consumed by customers within that state (Texas, in this example).  SB 3 is a vehicle that will allow direct subsidies of power production and consumption for other states at the expense of North Carolina utility customers.
