Governor Easley signed HB 855 into law. The bill establishes statewide nutrition standards for school food, snacks, etc.

All elementary schools will implement the standards by the end of the 2007-2008 school year, followed by middle schools and then high schools. Annual progress must be reported to the local administrative unit.

I would love to see nutrition “turnaround teams” sent to low nutrition/cheese fry schools. Kids can receive nutrition “remediation” after school, perhaps involving electric shock treatments. Even better, let’s give merit pay to cafeteria workers who post high nutrition scores.

Above all, I really wonder if DPI will celebrate an 80% pass rate for nutrition standards like it does for academic standards…
