John Hood blogs at sister site The Locker Room that Watauga County voters have defeated a quarter-cent sales tax hike referendum — with 62 percent opposed.

The sales tax hike has become a favorite of local officials who continue their quest for more revenue. Orange County citizens will vote up or down on the hike in November. Here’s a story I wrote on the issue in July. Since its publication, county officials have decided that, if approved, they will spend the new tax dollars, in part, on economic development, which is the issue I covered in the story.
