SEIU Takes Medicaid Money Away from Families for "Union" Dues

In a very disturbing move, the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) has convinced the state of Michigan to classify parents caring for their own mentally disabled adult children as "state employees." As a result, SEIU will be able to take money from the state’s Medicaid fund. By defining family caretakers as state employees, SEIU will be allowed to collect "union dues," despite providing no union benefits to the parents.

Even more baffling is the fact that, according to recent reports, home health aides for those same mentally disabled children are also categorized as union members for their duties. This allows SEIU to collect twice the Medicaid money with no benefits provided.

The average Medicaid withholding from the caretakers for their union membership is $360 a year.

Uncovered recently by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, this could be classified as nothing short of a Medicaid scam.

Berwick to Step Down as Head of CMS

At the end of this week (December 2nd), current head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Donald Berwick will step down after a controversial year as leader.

Berwick has been a disputatious choice for the Obama Administration since his recess appointment last year. From day one he has had to navigate the tricky waters of the newly passed health reform law and were he not stepping down, he would soon have to face the upcoming 2012 Supreme Court decision on that law and a tough reelection for President Obama.

After getting 42 Senate GOP votes against his re-nomination as leader of CMS, Berwick will be returning to the private sector. However, based on his controversial performance and many contentious statements as head of CMS, he may not miss the job all that much…

The nomination will now be given to Marilyn Tavenner, Berwick’s Principal Deputy Administrator and Chief Operating Officer at CMS.
