Bipartisan sponsors unveiled in a morning news conference Senate Bill 367, the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, which would allow disabled North Carolinians to benefit from 529-style tax-free savings accounts.

On the national level, the idea has earned criticism from groups like the Heritage Foundation. But S.B. 367 has support from one of the state’s most powerful senators, Rules Chairman Tom Apodaca. Sens. Tamara Barringer, R-Wake, Ralph Hise, R-Mitchell, and Jeff Jackson, D-Mecklenburg, discussed the measure in a brief news conference.
