The MSM seems to ignore the senseless laws and bureaucratic rules
that have made recovery from Katrina nearly impossible.  As the National Journal
reports, before houses can be demolished they must have a lab test for
asbestos.  Also before a tree stump can be removed from private
property, an archeological team must inspect it.  Historical
preservation teams must inspect damaged houses before they are
demolished and carted off.

On one site, said Lydia Kachadoorian, the area team
leader for archeology, uprooted trees exposed 300-year-old Native
American pottery. “We have an issue with heavy equipment driving over
really fragile resources,” she said.

This is the triumph of bureaucratic power over the lives of people
in need. We don’t care how much you suffer, our bureaucracy must be
allowed to carry out its mission of doing “good.” No wonder people are
not moving back. Why move back and spend valuable time fighting this
burearcracy.

As George Will noted on This Week,
why not give freedom a chance? Suspend all these needless laws and
regulations and let the people rebuild.  He then cited the example
of Ludwig Erhart, German finance minister after WWII, who suspended all
price and currency controls. Erhart’s action, opposed by many German
economists and allied generals, started the West German economic
expansion known as the German Economic Miracle.
