Longtime incumbents have a new excuse, coined by Rep. Charles Taylor of North Carolina’s 11th District, whenever they encounter a challenge for the offices to which they are rightfully entitled:

“If you will look at the amount of money the North Carolina Democrat Party and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee are pouring into (challenger Heath) Shuler(‘s) campaign, you will see that our spending is fairly equal,” Taylor said in a statement given to The Associated Press. “Because Mr. Shuler is so inexperienced, he would actually be the least serious challenger I have ever faced, if not for the millions of dollars propping him up coming from outsiders.”
