The N.C. Board of Education must decide soon whether to turn the elected post of Superintendent of Public Instruction into a real job.
The appointed board holds all the power over the state public education apparatus. If board members wish, they can throw a bone to elected Superintendent June Atkinson.
Otherwise, her role is much like that of Queen Elizabeth II (without all the fancy palaces and expensive trinkets). She has a nice title and no power.
