The woman found shot to death yesterday morning in Chapel Hill was the UNC student body president:
A young woman found shot to death in an intersection in the Hillcrest neighborhood early Wednesday was the student body president at UNC-Chapel Hill, police said today.
Police identified the dead woman as Eve Marie Carson, 22, of Athens, Ga., a Morehead-Cain scholar and a senior. They have made no arrests and have no suspects.
Police are claiming it’s a random crime, but I’ve watched enough “CSI” and “Criminal Minds” to know that when someone is shot five or six times, once in the head, random is not the first thing you think of.
Also strange is that it took more than 24 hours to identify someone as well-known as she was.
UPDATE: If this was random, in the sense that it was a carjacking and the criminals just decided to shoot a stranger multiple times, then we’ve got a very serious problem. This level of violence, though, often signals that the killer knew the victim.
UPDATE 2: From an emailer: “The shooter was probably from Durham.” I wouldn’t be surprised.
UPDATE 3: Here’s the story in the Athens Banner Herald. She was valedictorian of Clarke Central High in Athens.
UPDATE 4: It happened at Auburn, too. Both students from Georgia.
