Six Duke professors, five of whom were signatories to the infamous “Listening Statement” of last spring, got together on a panel last night at Duke to whine about criticism they’ve received for their public statements. Hey, life’s tough in the big city. You won’t find any coverage of the event, called “Shut up and teach,” in the N&O today or in The Herald-Sun (they only cover panels that include editor Bob Ashley, I guess).
But if you really want to get a good feel for what went on, go to the LieStoppers forum and scroll down to read an account by Locomotive Breath. It’s not mainstream journalism, but I got a better feel for the evening in his account than from The Chronicle’s. Not criticizing the Chronicle reporter, just saying that the rules of standard journalism do as much to keep information out off accounts as put them in.
