About a year ago, so many students at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business were caught cheating on a take-home exam that Duke is imposing new rules to build up adherence to its Honor Code. Among the initiatives is one that will require students to sign the Honor Code in public. I have to say that upon first reading the story, I chuckled and thought that a public signing was naive at best. But on second thought, I think it’s a good idea. Perhaps the possibility of public shame might deter some students who are keen on cheating since a public signing means everyone will talk about the cheater having thumbed his/her nose at his/her peers.
