As we learn here some UNC students are demanding that the school paper, The Daily Tar Heel, adopt a “gender-neutral language policy.” Conventional English usage is discriminatory and oppressive, you see.
I recall how my freshman English prof in college responded when someone brought that up long ago. She was about 70 and a self-proclaimed liberal feminist, but she said, “There is nothing to be gained for women by torturing the English language.”
Perhaps even sillier is the UNC “Diversity Advocate” certificate, which I wrote about in today’s Pope Center piece.
