NASCAR’s phenomenal success continues with the announcement of a five-year, $107 million deal with Sirius Satellite Radio. Why North Carolina lawmakers shelled out $4 million in state dollars last year to begin work on a motorsports test track near Charlotte is a mystery. What a waste of hard-earned dollars. Then late last year, our own Jeff A. Taylor wrote about efforts by Charlotte-area leaders to stick the area’s residents with the bill for a NASCAR museum. Elected officials have completely missed the point here. NASCAR’s execs are brilliant businesspeople who’ve earned their success. We should be looking to the organization as an example of business prowess, not as an industry that needs state support.
