Turns out, as NC State’s basketball program was shocked to learn yesterday, that illegal immigrants can be deported ? even if they were smuggled into the country as infants as Gavin Grant was.

This fact would represent a logistical problem for starry-eyed, self-congratulatory state legislators who have been trying since 2002 ? so far unsuccessfully, at least ? to pass bills to give illegal immigrants access to discounted, in-state tuition to the UNC and NC Community College systems (a privilege denied legal residents of the other 49 of the United States, as well it should be).

That obstacle could be removed, however, by the accomplished acronym-makers in the US Congress should the “Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act” (the *kaff!kaff!* “Dream Act”) pass. A date-sorted Google News search reveals just how keenly the issue is being watched by colleges and minority activists.
