Will the Chapel Hill town council heed the advice of town manager Roger Stancil? Stancil has recommended not funding the operations of a local museum that isn’t able to garner enough private support to stay open. They should. Stancil has rightly determined that $34,000 in public money is better utilized another way. While the amount is relatively small, the lesson in fiscal responsibility is huge. The museum may well be a nice little place, but clearly, it is outside the core services of local government. If the museum can’t raise private funds to pay the utility bill now, there is no reason to believe it won’t burn through the town’s $34,000 and then turn to the council for more.
