During the November campaign between Rep. Brad Miller and Vernon Robinson, I was appalled by the rhetoric Mr. Robinson used and I agreed with Rep. Miller, who was rightly offended. But now I challenge Rep. Miller to hold himself to his own standard of civility, as he explained in this May 30, 2006 quote published in the Raleigh News & Observer:

“I think that should not be part of what you agree to take on if you want to be involved in politics — that kind of personal attack without any basis,” Miller said.

Fast forward to Rep. Miller’s comments on Tuesday, made to the UNC Employee Forum about President Bush and the Iraq war. Who is throwing out the personal attack now?

“I’m not sure if the framers of the Constitution intended for the president to pursue a war policy with just the support of his wife and his dog,” Miller said.

Very disappointing. We should be able to debate Iraq policy without this type of comment. Perhaps someone should remind Rep. Miller that tens of millions of Americans, including many here in North Carolina, support the effort in Iraq.
