Led by Democratic lawmakers, the California Assembly approved a
universal health care
bill that would allow the state to run a
single-payer health care system that would cover all Californians,
doing away with the role of private insurance companies. The bill
positions legislators for a pre-election showdown with Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger, who is likely to veto the measure.
