Greetings from the Vice Provost!

I am always moved by graduation ceremonies, not so much by the pomp and ceremony of the large university-wide commencement exercises, but by the small departmental graduations. At these events we really feel what graduation means. We hear anecdotes about the graduates and tales of their achievements. We have a new tradition at NC State, born just last year: The Lavender Graduation.

Lavender Graduation is a solemn and moving event. The ceremony recognizes GLBT graduates and celebrates their achievements with family, friends, teachers and advisers. This year two keynote speakers, both graduating seniors, described their journeys since coming to NC State. Their stories illuminated how crucial the support of the university community has been to their survival and success. The Lavender Graduation is a wonderful new tradition for NC State. Congratulations to all the graduates!
