Some silly capitalists presume to own the property for which they paid and can produce a deed. More enlightened communists, however, like to talk about our viewsheds, our mountains, our streams, our greenspaces, etc. They were instrumental in outlawing gated communities in Asheville, because some people want to walk their dogs on other peoples’ lawns.

In the final days leading up to Asheville’s impending Downtown Master Planning Process, the Council of Independent Business Owners sent out an email warning, stating:

We’ve already heard some of the following:

– Moratorium on downtown development.
– Height limitations for all buildings.
– Increased fees.
– Elimination of air rights.
– Preservation of migratory bird paths.
– Elimination of shadows from tall buildings.
– Ensure that all buildings have an affordable housing component.
– Increased development for the homeless.
– Preservation of all trees.
– Decrease development, increase parks.

If it is decided, as it was with the Merrimon Corridor Zoning Study, that people in Cuba have as much say in what a landowner can do with his property as he does, I will be sure to post the link to the survey here.
