This week, Don Carrington provided Carolina Journal readers with perspective and new details on the $834,000 Corolla-to-Currituck ferry project, as CJ published a 3-day series about the failed effort pushed by Sen. Marc Basnight. WTKF-FM talk show host Lockwood Phillips, whose station serves coastal communities, has been following developments for months, and Thursday night he again welcomed Carrington to the show to share his investigative work. The compelling series also made the radar screen of the statewide talk show “NCSPIN,” which included kudos to Carrington and links to his work in its weekly e-mail newsletter distributed to 2,500 subscribers across the state. As “SPINCycle” put it, “Like garbage, this story smells the more it is stirred.” The saga includes illegal dredging, investigations by federal and state officials, questions over the size and safety of the pontoon boat, and most recently, the mysterious death of a Ferry department employee who was a key witness in a federal investigation.
