The rash of crime in Kenilworth hit closer to home today. It wasn’t anything big – less than $1000 in damages. But it’s good. An eleven-year-old with whom I work was bragging just two days ago about how cool it is to hijack things. One couldn’t take the conversation to a logical conclusion, all factors remaining equal. For the same reason Ayn Rand is faulted, those who want to cruise down easy street expect the producing class to shake things up so they can continue to be charitable. I’m reminded of the words, “We’ve always muddled through before,” said by a girl who inherited a corporation oblivious to her parents’ sacrifices. I’ve contented myself in concluding that those focused on production will always be viewed as greedier than those focused on consumption. We can never give more than we get, but could we think of the damages we’re inflicting on others for a change?
