Just announced is a Headwaters Gathering at “one of the greenest campuses in America,” Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa. The event, which will engage “inspired leaders,” will be held March 27-29. One reason Swannanoa was selected was, “Our region holds the coal fields of the east where mountaintop removal mining stands as a dark symbol of the carbon era, and today, the fight to stop it is catalyzing heroic activism.”

“From a town meeting, convened by a panel of experts, to compelling whole-group sessions, and a writing intensive, we will find our collective voice.” Portions of the collective interested in participating must register. Those portions participating in the writing intensive “will write in response to prompts, brainstorm metaphors for conveying the crisis, and explore new potentials in both print and online platforms.”

To practice what it teaches, the conference will, among other things:

• Provide condiments, beverages, and other food items in bulk instead of individual packaging.
• Offer shade grown, organic, fair trade coffee, and fair trade tea, and cocoa.
• Compost food waste in Warren Wilson College’s GreenDrum.
• Conduct as paperless a conference as possible and, when needed, use only FSC certified paper.
• Encourage conference attendees staying at the discounted hotel lodging (see accommodations section) to carpool to campus.
