I don’t know why anyone is surprised that Sean Penn would win the best-actor Oscar for playing a martyred gay politician killed by a right-winger. Paulie Shore could have played the part and won with all that going for him.

Of course you just knew he’d have to get political:

“Those who saw the signs of hatred, I think it is a good time for those who voted against gay marriage to contemplate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren’s eyes. We need to have equal rights for everyone.”

Someone should tell him that the “elegant” president he praised tonight also is against gay marriage.
