Regular readers of John Locke Foundation publications are aware the public policy implications of the dreaded “sprawl.” Though it is not hard to believe that people would choose to live in North Carolina — I did, and would do so again — some folks find it appalling that these people should build new homes, use roads and generally exapand the capital infrastructure of our cities, counties and state. More aptly, we should call it citizen-choice driven growth.

Yesterday, a helpful and free email digest from the National Center for Policy Analysis featured a story on the relationship of sprawl to military base closings. Of course, the John Locke Foundation is on top of this with a speaker next Monday to address the economics of base closings…a topic that should be of keen interest to all Americans and especially to North Carolinians.

The story ran in USA Today on Dec. 2 and I cannot seem to locate a link. However, a similar story at CNN.com makes most of the same points.
