The California Energy Commission is poised to regulate the energy consumption of LCD and other large flat-screen TVs. Notwithstanding objections from the Consumer Electronics Association, new rules should be handed down by Nov. 4 and they’ll be phased in for new TVs beginning in January 2011.

Because California is by far the nation’s largest consumer market, the California regs will drive production practices nationwide. And the CEA says the news standards will eliminate large percentages of popular, affordable HDTVs from store shelves.

If you have some spare cash and a storage unit, may be time to invest in a few dozen flat-panels.
