State Republican Party chairman Tom Fetzer announced in a morning news conference that State Board of Elections staff have started an investigation of Gov. Beverly Perdue’s campaign committee based on two complaints Fetzer filed.
Fetzer also raised new questions about the Perdue campaign. First, he says 12 people subpoenaed to testify in the elections board’s earlier hearing into former Gov. Mike Easley’s campaign are large-scale campaign donors who also have contributed to Perdue. Fetzer asks whether that any of those 12 people were called on to participate in pay-to-play schemes that would benefit Perdue. Second, Fetzer questions contributions to Perdue from Harry and Deirdre Shaw. Harry Shaw, president of S&W Ready Mix Concrete Co., purchased an office building from Lanny Wilson and Nick Garrett, two players in the ongoing Easley scandal.
