Dan Way of Carolina Journal and Morgan Josey Glover of the News & Record report that the Office of Charter Schools has received 27 charter school applications. A handful of these schools were unable to obtain a charter in the past because the state-imposed cap of 100 schools limited the number of charters available in a given year. The NC General Assembly eliminated the charter cap this year.
The North Carolina Charter School Advisory Council will review the applications and make approval recommendations to the State Board of Education.
North Carolina charter schools continue to outperform district schools on state tests.
