Joe Klein offers the following assessment in the latest TIME of the Afghanistan war:

In addition to all the other problems we’re facing ? the corruption of the Karzai government, the election chaos, the porous Pakistani border ? it has become apparent that we’re pursuing the wrong military strategy in this frustrating war.

Had Klein written this a year ago, there?s no doubt where the column would have gone: Blame Bush.

Does Klein now aim his poison pen at President Obama? Of course not. The commander-in-chief is mentioned twice. In the first instance, we?re reminded that all of the new troops Obama ordered to the Afghan theater have not yet arrived. Near the end of the column, we get this:

The military wants a decision soon, but both the President and the Secretary of Defense are undecided ? as they should be.

So a decision to stay the course makes sense now? Interesting.
