Surprise: The Journal isn’t satisfied with the Winston-Salem Police Department’s report on minority stops for minor traffic offenses:
The question of why black drivers are more likely to be stopped for minor traffic violations in Winston-Salem than white drivers isn’t going away. The city council’s public-safety committee should join with Police Chief Pat Norris in finding answers – including by putting more cameras in police cars. The city must determine why a disproportionate number of blacks are being stopped.
Once again, we hear Vivian Burke’s view of the situation:
The public-safety committee took up the issue Monday. Councilwoman Vivian Burke, who leads the committee, said that some things haven’t changed since she became an elected official in 1977, referring to stories she has heard from black drivers.
“Some years ago, I made a statement when I was first elected: ‘This is one of the most racist cities in the nation.’ Well, we can still see some of that,” she said.
