We could see this one coming. The International Civil Rights Center and Museum is asking the City of Greensboro for $1.5 million in taxpayers’ money.
But City Councilman Mike Barber wants to connect a few dots first:
Barber asked questions about another possible issue: the museum’s former partnership with N.C. A&T and then-Chancellor James Renick.
Under the 2001 plan, A&T raised money for the museum. Renick and other A&T leaders sat on the museum’s board of directors.
Last week, a state audit revealed that $380,000 was wrongfully deposited into Renick’s discretionary fund instead of university coffers.
A&T administrators say the university misinterpreted the policy for how the money was to be used.
But several sit-in museum organizers, including Weaver Foundation President Richard “Skip” Moore, said Tuesday there was no indication of mismanagement at the museum.
“We have tried to keep an environment around our finances that passes the smell test,”said Amelia Parker, the museum director.
Anyone else see what’s missing fron this article? How about an indication of the museum’s progress? I certainly hope the council was briefed on such progress and it just didn’t make it into the paper. But never assume.
