A bill (SB 1201 By Sen. Daniel G. Clodfelter, D – Mecklenburg) has been introduced in the NC Legislature that MORE THAN DOUBLES the sales tax on the purchase of most cars. It changes the current rate of 3% and makes it the same as the current statewide sales tax rate of 6.75% (7.25% in Mecklenburg). On a new $20,000 car, the current tax runs $600. If this bill becomes law that amount would jump to $1,350.
