A group of students at UNC-Chapel Hill held a sit-in yesterday
at The Daily Tar Heel to protest a cartoon the paper ran that showed an
image of the Prophet Muhammad, a no-no of the Islam faith which set off
a firestorm of controversy on the campus with members of the Muslim
Student Association saying they were offended.

Monday’s sit-in was an effort, in their words, to get the newspaper to issue an apology. When the editor’s rightful said they would not, the organizers then demanded – through the media – that advertisers pull their support of the paper.

There
are times in life when I believe the reaction to something is far worse
than the actual event people are complaining about. This is one of
those times. The Muslim Student Association was on the right path last
week when it was holding discussions about Islam and why the cartoon
was offensive. To hold this sit-in, even if the group didn’t support
it, is a step back.
