Asheville’s unemployment “spiked” in January. Numbers are evidently not available for February or March. Whereas the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area endured the highest increase in unemployment, its percentage of unemployed employables ranks ninth among the state’s fourteen MSA’s. We thank our government for all the jobs they create and save.

Speaking of government job creation, before porkulus got involved in economic development full-swing, Buncombe County taxpayers awarded Unison $1.4 million through the approval of the Buncombe County Commissioners, and Asheville taxpayers gave Unison $47,250 the next year. According to reports aired on WWNC today, which I am unable to find referenced on the net, Unison reported it will not be creating any jobs, and Congressman Heath Shuler toured the plant to find out what government might do to turn the business into an economic engine.
