John Stossel’s critique of government schools, “Stupid In America: How We Cheat Our Kids”, aired on Friday. Now the debate begins!

Initially, I wanted to post comments from the 20/20 message board, but I found that teachers repeated one theme again and again: comments from those outside of the public school teaching profession have no validity. Deflecting the blame to students, parents, schools administrators, or society is a close second. Oops, I forgot to mention inadequate funding and low teacher pay. While I am at it, I should also mention the dreaded No Child Left Behind and pesky state standards. I think I forgot a few along the way, but you get the idea. It is everybody else’s fault.

Teachers are adept at playing the “responsibility card” until it is pulled on them.
