Another classic Charlotte tale gets a happy ending. The crosswalk saga at Community House Middle School had long passed farce and was heading toward tragedy. No one connected to the school — parents, teachers, administrators — seemed to be able to prevail upon the powers-that-be to put in a crosswalk so that kids that lived directly across a fairly busy street could walk to school. (CMS never said it, but the district clearly fears getting sued if some kid gets hit with a crosswalk, which is after all an invitation to walk.)

It took your basic WCNC investigative shame and embarass story to get the city to put in a crosswalk. This is the same city, recall, that wants to put in bike paths/lanes and wider sidewalks everywhere so that we won’t need cars anymore. Guess we are never supposed to cross the street either.
