The Journal supports the American Academy of Pediatrics’ call for Congressional oversight of advertising that may be harmful to children:

The academy wants Congress to step in. The pediatricians want junk-food ads banned during children’s programming, alcohol ads restricted to the product alone without any cartoon characters or beautiful women, and a ban on interactive advertising on the children’s digital programs…..

Wherever Americans go today, they are besieged with product pitches made with unhealthy and unwise imagery. For parents to protect their children from these harmful messages, they would have to isolate them from society as a whole. There are few places in America where one can go without being exposed to advertising.

For parents to protect their children from harmful anything they would have to isolate them from society as a whole. So let’s just change society as a whole. The possibilities are limitless with a new Congress coming in January.
